Paper. It’s something we all use everyday, and often without batting an eyelash at it. Sure, it’s the media that we use most often today, but we rarely stop to think about how we can really push the limits of a single piece of paper. However, Pete Callesen does just that.
Now, I don’t know a whole lot about Pete, but I do know his pieces are absolutely breathtaking. If you’ve ever tried to make something 3D out of paper, you’ll know how hard getting curves and intricate shapes really is–just imagine trying it on such a small scale! It’s incredible what someone can do with a single piece of paper. He takes flat planes of paper, draws out an image, and then creates a 3D sculpture out of that shape. It’s really hard to describe what he does, so I will get right to the works. I’m really speechless.

Holy curves! Mind-bogglingly lifelike.

And so much detail!

Creepy, but cool “x-ray” effect.

Great example of how he cuts out a shape for his sculptures.

And just look at the delicate detail. Almost looks like actual plaster columns!!

Another x-ray type piece. It takes a steady hand to create such small, intricate shapes!

This one is blue-print like. Just think of the time you’d have to spend planning something like this.

Everything fits so perfectly!

You want impressive detail? Check it.

Even has a scalloped roof!

More delicate realism. Stunning.

He really takes care of the whole piece of paper in terms of composition. Gives a nice context to the sculpture!

Did I mention how creepily real these look?
